In a bid to strengthen its institutional capacity, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) recently organized a transformative three-day workshop in Abuja. With generous support from Action Aid Nigeria, the focus of the workshop was on crafting a strategic plan under the Women Voice and Leadership project, funded by Global Affairs Canada.
At the heart of the event was NAWOJ’s National President, Comrade Ladi Bala, who underscored the importance of aligning their work plan with the association’s vision and mission. The previous plan, created a decade ago and sponsored by UNDP, had become obsolete, unable to address current challenges effectively.
Comrade Bala extended heartfelt appreciation to Action Aid Nigeria and Global Affairs Canada for their invaluable support. He recognized the financial complexities involved in organizing such workshops, emphasizing the indispensable nature of the assistance provided. Comrade Helen Udofa, the national secretary, urged association leaders to seize this opportunity to make positive contributions, emphasizing the urgent need for funding to implement crucial projects.
The workshop’s resource person, Mr. Sunny Dada, emphasized NAWOJ’s potential to reposition itself by leveraging its network assets. He highlighted that the strategic plan crafted during the workshop would serve as a guiding beacon for NAWOJ’s direction over the next 5-10 years.
Participants at the workshop expressed overwhelming optimism, believing that the new work plan would bring significant benefits to NAWOJ members, women, children, and the less privileged in the country. This initiative stands as a testament to NAWOJ’s commitment to empowering women journalists and making a positive impact on society.
