Breaking : Zamfara’s Matawalle bags Governor of the Year Award

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, has been nominated for the award of ‘Governor of the Year’
by a leading labour and youth online news platform, Aluta News, as part of activities marking its 2nd Year Anniversary.

Aluta Media Limited, Publishers of Aluta News (www.alutanews.ng), said Matawalle was nominated for the prestigious award, having scaled all the strict standards of excellence laid down by the Board of Directors of the media organisation.

According to the publisher of the premier Labour, youth and current affairs news portal, Comrade Gambo Jagindi, the assessment committee found the governor worthy of the award after taking careful stock of his performance index since he assumed leadership of Zamfara, and for being the grassroot leader in the Nigerian democratic space.

”This distinguished award is in recognition of the governor’s outstanding courage, patriotism in upholding the highest values of integrity and democratic ethics,” Jagindi said.

Other awardees include, Sen. Uba Sani, Bashir Idris, Sen. Aliyu Wammako, Dr Halimatu Sadiya Muhammad, Nura Sani Kangiwa, Peace Corp of Nigeria, AUPCTRE among others.

According to him, Aluta News’ core mandate is the promotion of good governance outcomes in state and non-state institutions, while also serving as a whistle blowing platform whose goal is to promote justice and fair play.

The Aluta News boss, further explained that the online news platform was a purveyor of credible information as a tool for education, and which engaged in investigative journalism.

”Aluta News offers consistent advocacy platforms for good governance,” Jagindi added.

DIRECT PRIMARIES: BETTER OPTION FOR YOUTH POLITICAL MAINSTREAMING!!!

SO MUCH CONTROVERSY IS ONGOING NOW IN NIGERIA OVER THE NEW ELECTORAL BILL PASSED BY THE 9TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

FIRST, WE MUST COMMEND THE 9TH NASS FOR BOTH THE PIB AND THE NEW ELECTORAL ACT, WITH WHICH THEY HAVE WRITTEN THEIR NAMES IN PURE GOLD!!!

MY TAKE ON THE CONTROVERSIES SURROUNDING THE DIRECT PRIMARIES FOR ALL POLITICAL PARTIES, AS ENSHRINED IN THE BILL, IS AS FOLLOWS;

  1. IT WILL ENSURE THOROUGH CHECKS AND AUTHENTIFICATION OF MEMBERSHIP LIST OF ALL PARTIES, WHILE IMPROVING MEMBERSHIP DRIVE, AS ALL POLITICIANS WOULD STRIVE TO MOBILIZE MORE OF THE SYMPATHIZERS INTO PARTY MEMBERSHIP;
  2. IT WILL MAKE THE LEADERS OF PARTIES TAKE THE MEMBERS SERIOUSLY AND TREAT THEM BETTER;
  3. IT WILL GIVE THE YOUTHS, BEING THE LARGER POPULATION IN NIGERIA, MORE VOICE AND STRENGTH IN THE AFFAIRS OF POLITICAL PARTIES, IF THEY CAN UNITE WITHIN;
    1. THE YOUTHS WILL HAVE BETTER OPPORTUNITIES OF GALVANISING AND MOBILIZING THEMSELVES TO TAKE OVER THE AFFAIRS OF PARTIES AND PRODUCE CANDIDATES FOR ELECTIONS;
  4. THOUGH IT WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE FOR BOTH PARTIES AND INEC TO EXECUTE DIRECT PRIMARIES, YET IT WILL SAVE THE HUGE STRESS AND OVERALL FINANCIES, ENERGY AND TIME INVESTED IN PROSECUTING LEGAL TUSSLES OVER DELAGATE LISTS AND IMPOSITION OF CANDIDATES!!!

ALTHOUGH IMPOSING DIRECT PRIMARIES ON ALL PARTIES IS SOME HOW UNDEMOCRATIC, YET IT SERVES A MORE CRITICAL AND PRODUCTIVE PURPOSE, CONSIDERING THE LEVEL AND STATE OF DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA TODAY!!!

FROM THE DEPTH OF THE HEART OF THE RISING-SON.

Muhammad Nami, who is the former Chairman of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) stated that due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, taxation has become the mainstay for economies the world over in providing the required revenue to fund governance.

“Today, taxation has become the mainstay of every economy around the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the earnings of most economies, especially those whose revenue sources were fetched from activities such as recreational tourism, medical tourism, minerals exploration, commodity exportation etc.

“These activities were performed minimally, and in some cases even experienced total cessation due to physical restrictions imposed by many nations during the COVID-19 lockdown. Economies across the world have had no other choice but to look inward to taxation as the most viable alternative to provide the required revenue to fund government.” He stated.

He went further to note that with the COVID-19 lockdown, digital technologies have transformed the way and manner humans interact and do business with each other, which has consequently brought about novel challenges for tax administrators.

“This new normal brought about a greater embrace of digital technologies that came with its own challenges for tax administrators. One of these challenges is the inadequate capacity of tax administrators to understand and track digitalised transactions which has become the order of the day.”

Regardless of these challenges, Muhammad Nami, who served as Chairman of the African Tax Administration Forum up to November 2020, and is currently the Chairman of the Joint Tax Board in Nigeria, has promised that as President of CATA he will mobilise the member countries and other tax bodies to build capacity of tax administrators to tackle the challenges they face.

“One goal I hope to achieve as your President is to work hand-in-hand with member countries to expand the character of tax administration such that our work is in tune with today’s innovation and realities.” CATA’s newly elected President stated.

The Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA) was established following a decision taken at a meeting of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers held in Barbados in 1977. The Forum has played a critical role in the formulation of tax policies and procedures of its member countries.

A deal is underway for additional A220-300 series aircrafts to the fleet of Akwa Ibom State owned airline, Ibom Air, as Governor Udom Emmanuel remains upbeat in leaving enduring legacies in the state.

Governor Emmanuel dropped the hint while speaking at an event to mark the 85th birthday of the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area, Obong Etim Charles Daniel Abia, in his palace.

From records of the state’s finances, the Governor explained his administration has performed well with the construction companies handling projects in the state, but that issues of climate and weather conditions, the COVID pandemic and other natural occurrences have impacted on the pace of works.

“People have said a lot of things about developments and projects. Your Majesty, we have had major challenges in the past two years that we never envisaged in governance.

“The whole of 2020, nobody could do much because of COVID. That took into 2021 and in 2021 we were so poised for infrastructure development, but the volume of rainfall has been unprecedented”, the governor explained.

“The only reason I won’t be at the banquet is that as I’m leaving here, we’re signing fresh agreements that will give us ten brand new A220-300 Air Buses, so that even when I leave office, it will remain as an ensuring legacy”, he added.

Governor Emmanuel congratulated Obong Abia on his 85th birthday and spoke glowingly of the endearing characteristics of the Eket patriarch.

“In life, I watch out for two words in any leader and any human being, character and charisma. As a paramount ruler, that your character, to me, is that charm that inspires devotion in others, including me.

He maintained that charisma is outwardly seen and attracts, whereas character is inert and endears one to others, and maintained that Obong Abia is blessed with both attributes.

With these qualities, the Governor affirmed that the patriarch had united Eket people, as evident in his ability to bring together virtually all the Ekid elites in one event.

Governor Emmanuel lauded the Eket Royal Father’s initiative of using the special event to honour some illustrious sons of Ekid extraction with the prestigious title of “Mkpisong Ekid, stressing that at a stage in one’s life such recognitions of their trail in life outweighs material benefits, and congratulated the recipients.

He appreciated Governor Emmanuel and the Eket leaders for their support and commitment to serve Eket people Akwa Ibom State, and by extension all Nigerians.

Expatiating on the honour bestowed on the awardees, the Attah Ekid Afid said the title, Mkpisong, literally means Pillar of Progress and Leading Light in the community and establishes a class of leaders proudly recognized and honoured for leading roles in the affairs of Eket people and Akwa Ibom State.
