ASSOCIATION OF RESIDENT DOCTORS (ARD) UNIVERSITY OF UYO TEACHING HOSPITAL (UUTH)& NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENT GENERAL MEDICAL AND DENTALPRACTITIONERS (NAGGMDP)-AKWA IBOM STATE OFFICIALDISSOCIATION OF ASSOCIATION OF RESIDENT DOCTORS (ARD)UNIVERSITY OF UYO TEACHING HOSPITAL (UUTH)& NATIONALASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENT GENERAL MEDICAL AND DENTALPRACTITIONERS (NAGGMDP) -AKWA IBOM STATE FROMINDUSTRIAL ACTION EMBARKED ON BY DR. EMEM ABRAHAM,CHAIRMAN NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION – AKWA IBOMSTATE

The leadership of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD UUTH) and National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners Akwa Ibom State have been immensely distressed following the abduction of a retired colleague of ours. We consider this extremely painful and extend our full sympathies with the family. Consequently as a leadership we have constantly engaged with the different arms of the security agencies and we are hopeful, believing in the firm assurances offered by the gentlemen of the security agencies, that our colleague will return to us shortly.
During the period, the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association, in the first instance declared a 3-day warning strike and just yesterday (18th May, 2024) declared an INDEFINITE AND TOTAL STRIKE affecting all hospitals, including federal (UUTH), State Government General Hospitals, Health Centres and private hospitals).
THE ISSUES

  1. During the declaration of the initial 3 days warning strike, no vote was cast to determine if members wanted a strike or not. The NMA constitution clearly states that the Congress is the highest decision making body of the NMA, and on any issue where there is a motion and counter motion, the house must be divided and a vote cast. Despite strong protestations from the mover of a counter motion and its seconder alongside other members, The NMA Chairman dictatorially, in her characteristic high-handedness, ignored the call for a vote on whether doctors should proceed on a strike or not.
  2. The NMA declared a strike on Wednesday (15th May, 2024) and contrary to extant Labour laws, as at Friday morning did not send a strike notice formally communicating that decision to our employers. Several judgments of the National Industrial Courts is clear as to the right procedure for withdrawal of services. We find it appalling that a leadership that should know, will act in a way that puts the career of our members at risk.
  3. Just yesterday the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)-AKS declared a TOTAL AND INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION without proper consultations and without any prior 21 days notice to the Government, public and our employers. For the benefit of the public, a total strike means no emergency services, no labour ward services or childbirth, etc. Of course this action takes shelter in the wrong side of the law and it is sad that a leadership you think should have the privilege of those who know the law to advise it will continue to drag a body of highly respected professionals to act in a way that will subject us to ridicule in the court of public opinion.
  4. The more ridiculous and shameful part is that Madam Chairman called a meeting to take a decision to cripple health services in the entire state and scheduled it for 4:00pm on Saturday, 18th May, 2024 and then sent words across that she preferred to attend a BURIAL CEREMONY over a congress she summoned as Chairman. How responsible or irresponsible is that?
Please take into consideration the outcome of the Congress and its impact on Society while she attended a burial.
    THE MORAL ISSUES
By our training as doctors, we are to do the highest good for the highest number of persons.
Let us ask during this strikes, will our women not give birth, will accidents not occur, will emergencies not happen? What is the offence of those unborn babies? If the kidnappers put one life or even two at risk, should we as
doctors put 100 more at risk?
As we speak, there is an extant “no work no pay policy” that will affect
Resident doctors and House Officers in UUTH, of which the Director of Hospital Services of the Federal Ministry of Health has already contacted the President of the ARD. Furthermore, House Officers training which is time-bound has been put on hold.
It is also pertinent to note that a Strike Monitoring Team was set up which caught owners of Private hospitals especially those who passionately insisted on the strike seeing hundreds of patients whom they diverted to their private hospitals. The owners of these particular hospitals insisted on closure of the Government hospitals which cater to the poor but did not close their own hospitals. We are aware that the NMA Chairman, because those involved are her peers, have swept it under the carpet necessitating the Chairman of the Strike Monitoring Team to resign. What has NMA done to those private hospitals and their owners? Why focus on the only services available to the poor in our society?
    OUR STAND
Considering the illegality of the strike action not following well-established protocols for withdrawal of services either due to ignorance or unnecessary pride, considering the duplicity of denying the poor health services in
Government facilities while festering the pockets of private hospital owners, the leaderships of the National Association of Government General, Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP-AKS), being the body of doctors exclusively working for the Government of Akwa Ibom State and the Association of Resident Doctors (UUTH), both Associations being the 1st and 2nd largest affiliates, do hereby dissociate ourselves from the purported TOTAL AND INDEFINITE industrial action by Dr. Emem Abraham, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association Akwa Ibom State.

The said declaration does not reflect the considered, usually contemplative, opinion of our members, severally and as a group.

NAGGMDP-AKS & ARD UUTH will explore alternative options to ensure our dear colleague is released immediately while still attending to our patients at our places of primary assignment.

The leadership calls on all her members to report to duty while the
Associations engage with the Government to handle the challenge.
The leadership also frowns at the absence of the NMA-AKS Chairman at a sensitive meeting which she had orchestrated to cripple health services to the public while preferring to attend a burial ceremony.

Our various Congresses will be communicated soonest.

Signed

The Sacrifice of a Lifetime: Selling My Land to Save a Life

What sacrifices have you made in life?

     ———- STÀNDBYNETWORK ———-

ImaUmoekah is the name.

In the journey of life, we are often faced with choices that test our character and challenge our resolve. For me, the most profound sacrifice I have ever made was selling my land to save the life of a gravely ill loved one. This act was not just a financial decision but a testament to the lengths we go for those we cherish.

My land was more than just a piece of property; it was a part of my heritage and a symbol of my family’s history. Passed down through generations, it represented the hard work and dreams of my ancestors. Selling it felt like giving up a piece of my soul. Yet, when faced with the deteriorating health of a family member, the decision became clear.

The illness struck suddenly, turning our lives upside down. Doctors’ visits, medical bills, and the constant worry took a heavy toll on us. Despite our best efforts, it became evident that more resources were needed to ensure the survival and recovery of our loved one. As the financial burden grew, I knew that drastic measures were necessary.

Selling the land was a heart-wrenching choice. I vividly remember the day the transaction was finalized, a mixture of sorrow and hope filling my heart. Parting with the land felt like losing a part of my identity, but the thought of saving a life gave me strength.

The funds from the sale provided access to the best medical care available. Surgeries, treatments, and medications that once seemed out of reach became attainable. Gradually, we witnessed a miraculous improvement in the health of our loved one. The sacrifice was paying off in ways that reaffirmed my decision.

This experience taught me the true meaning of sacrifice and the value of life. Material possessions, no matter how cherished, pale in comparison to the well-being of those we love. The land that once held so much significance became a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of selflessness.

In reflecting on this journey, I realize that the sacrifice was not just about selling a piece of property. It was about embracing the essence of humanity – the willingness to give up something precious for the greater good. This act has left an indelible mark on my soul, reminding me that true wealth lies in the health and happiness of our loved ones.

Selling my land for the survival of a sick soul was the greatest sacrifice I have ever made, and it is a decision I will never regret. It stands as a powerful reminder that in the end, the most significant sacrifices we make are those driven by love and compassion.

Ikot Nkwo Model Primary Health Center Set for Inauguration Today

   ———- STÀNDBYNETWORK ——–

The community of Ikot Nkwo in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area is abuzz with anticipation as Governor Umo Eno arrives today to inaugurate the newly built Model Primary Health Centre. This state-of-the-art facility, initiated in August as part of Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda, marks a significant advancement in primary health care delivery in Nigeria.

Elder Obong Ibanga Etukudo, in an interview, expressed the community’s excitement, noting that this is the first government project in Ikot Nkwo since the state’s creation. “This place was a forest and it seemed it would never be useful for anything, but today, we are happy that the governor has built a health center for us,” he said.

The project was conceived after Governor Eno visited a makeshift health clinic at the Village Council Hall and subsequently initiated the construction of a model clinic meeting World Health Organization standards.

The modern health center boasts a comprehensive range of facilities, including maternity and immunization sections, a nutrition section, delivery rooms, and both male and female wards. It also features an antenatal clinic, doctors’ consulting rooms, a minor procedure room, an emergency unit, and accommodations for doctors, nurses, and community health extension workers, along with a space for food demonstrations.

The inauguration is scheduled for noon today at the healthcare facility in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.

Ibesikpo-Asutan Communities Urge Governor Umo Eno to Halt Unconsulted Land Acquisition

            ——-STANDBYNETWORK——–

Community leaders from twelve villages in Ibesikpo-Asutan Local Government Area are calling on Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pst. Umo Eno, to address what they describe as the forceful acquisition of their lands without proper consultation. The affected communities include Nung Ukana Ikot Obio Akpan, Nung Ukana Ikot Efre, Ikot Okubo, and neighboring villages.

In response to a recent newspaper publication announcing the acquisition, the community leaders issued a communique condemning the process as opaque, secretive, and suspicious. They assert that they were neither informed nor consulted about the planned acquisition.

The leaders express their refusal to cede their lands for any purpose other than agriculture. The government publication indicated the lands would be used for a residential estate, while Hon. Ubong Attah, a member representing Ibesikpo Asutan in AKHA, and clan head Etebom Nsidibe Etuk have claimed a private university is planned for the site.

Upon learning of the acquisition plans on April 11, 2024, the community leaders sought intervention from the Commissioner for Lands, Captain Iniobong Ekong, the following day, voicing their concerns and displeasure.

While praising Governor Eno’s commitment to the state, the leaders argue that converting their agricultural lands for private development would exacerbate hunger and poverty among the predominantly farming and animal husbandry-dependent communities.

They urge the Governor to swiftly intervene, suggesting the lands be used for agricultural projects after proper consultation. The communique calls for the cancellation of the planned acquisition and an investigation into those allegedly using the Governor’s name for private gain.

Highlighting the critical role of agriculture in the ARISE Agenda, the leaders stress the importance of maintaining farmland, especially during the ongoing food crisis. They point out that many previously acquired estates, such as Idu Housing Estate and Dakkada Housing Estate, remain undeveloped, particularly in Ibesikpo.

Instead of private developments, they propose using the land for integrated farms to address food scarcity and create jobs, aligning with the Governor’s ARISE Agenda.

I’m wearing my mask of “Being True to myself” THE TRUTH

What’s the oldest things you’re wearing today?

EMBRACING AUTHENTICITY: WEARING MY  MASK – “BEING TRUE TO MYSELF”

In a world where authenticity seems to be a rare gem, I’ve found my own way of staying true to myself – by wearing a mask. No, not the metaphorical mask we often talk about shedding to reveal our true selves. I’m talking about a physical mask, one that covers half of my face yet reveals so much more about who I am.

In today’s society, masks have taken on a new significance. They’ve become symbols of responsibility, protection, and solidarity. But for me, wearing a mask goes beyond these practical purposes. It’s a statement of authenticity, a declaration of my commitment to being true to myself.

For years, I struggled with the pressure to conform, to fit into predefined molds dictated by society. I tried to blend in, to hide the parts of myself that didn’t quite fit the expectations of others. But with each mask I wore, I felt a little piece of myself slipping away.

Then came the pandemic, and with it, the universal mandate to wear masks in public spaces. At first, it felt like just another inconvenience, another barrier between me and the world. But as I adjusted to this new normal, I began to see the mask not as a hindrance, but as a tool for self-expression.

With each mask I chose to wear, I made a conscious decision to reflect a different aspect of myself. Some days, I opt for bold patterns and vibrant colors, expressing my creativity and zest for life. Other days, I choose simplicity and understatement, embodying a sense of calm and introspection.

But regardless of the design, each mask serves as a reminder to myself – and to the world – that I refuse to hide who I am. I am multifaceted, complex, and ever-evolving, and I refuse to apologize for that.

In a society that often values conformity over individuality, wearing my mask is an act of rebellion. It’s a refusal to conform to narrow standards of acceptability, and a celebration of the rich tapestry of human diversity.

Of course, wearing a mask doesn’t negate the need for genuine connection and vulnerability. It doesn’t absolve me of the responsibility to show up authentically in my relationships and interactions. But it does provide a tangible reminder of the power of authenticity, and the freedom that comes from embracing who we truly are.

So the next time you see me wearing my mask, know that it’s not just about protecting myself and others from a virus. It’s about honoring the truth of who I am, and inviting others to do the same. Because in a world that often tries to mask our true selves, there’s nothing more revolutionary than being unapologetically, authentically, and beautifully you.
