FRANK ARCHIBONG: A Rewarder Of Men

There are people in Akwa Ibom State today that even if politics pass away or there is no more politics, their names, due to their legacies and antecedents, can never be forgotten in the sands of time.

A typical case of this assertion is Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio. Akpabio, the current Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is one man that no Akwa Ibomite, no matter how young, would ever forget.

Almost 9 years after judiciously serving his two-term tenure as the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the name, Godswill Akpabio still loudly rings bell virtually in the ears of everyone, and mouths wagging about him.

The reason for this is simple; Akpabio is celebrated across boards and is still very relevant today because he built human capacity and developed people. In fact, Akpabio took pleasure in building people. As the people will say; he practically turned boys into men and gave the teeming Akwa Ibomites hope of existence, and is still doing same even as the Senate President.

Even though the successive governors have done their best, the name Akpabio and his legacies are still hard to let off lips.

Similarly, without going far, there is another great, unassuming, big-hearted, competent, politically savvy, and exceptional Frank, the son of Bassey Archibong from Ikot Ibiok Eket in the mold of Godswill Akpabio. A man who has been very careful in his dealings as a politician. A man who does not talk much yet his actions speak volumes.

It is on record that throughout his years in politics, Hon. Frank Archibong has done his very best to structure his men (followers) to stand on their feet. As a local government chairman of Eket, Hon. Archibong facilitated employment for and ensured Eket youth went to work both onshore and offshore with the oil servicing companies operating around. He placed many indigenes of Eket on the payroll and empowered some people with vehicles, and motorcycles. In fact, he gave Eket local government a face to shine.

He left the local government council and became commissioner, the Eket-born politicians did even more and ensured all those following and alluding loyalty to him were well fared. He made sure he facilitated appointments for some of them and supported some by all means.

Just recently, the unassuming Frank Archibong single-handedly nominated the many budding Eket youths, not only in Eket, those he knows are deserving of reward and have been faithful to him for years for appointment as Media and Youth Mobilization Aides to Governor Umo Eno. What a rare, extraordinary, and kind gesture!

There is nothing as pleasant and fulfilling as having a man who thinks and cares about his subjects and knows how and when to reward them. Indeed, FRANK ARCHIBONG IS THE REWARDER OF MEN. He is sure replicating to his people, exactly what Akpabio did for Akwa Ibom people when he was the governor.

There is no gain in saying the fact that such actions of his will surely make him remain even more relevant preceding successive administrations in the state.

NAWOJ NEC Announces NEW Date and Venue for Triennial National Delegates Conference

October 20, 2023

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) is gearing up for its highly-anticipated Triennial National Delegates Conference, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) has made a significant announcement. The NEC recently convened for an online meeting, presided over by NAWOJ’s President, Comrade Ladi Bala, on Thursday, October 19, 2023. During this meeting, crucial decisions were made that will shape the upcoming conference.

New Dates and Venue

One of the most significant decisions from the meeting was the selection of the date and venue for the Triennial National Delegates Conference. NAWOJ NEC has fixed the dates for the conference as November 24-26, 2023. This represents a nine-day shift from the previously announced date of November 15, 2023. Additionally, the conference’s venue has been confirmed to be the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

This change in dates was motivated by various factors discussed during the meeting. At a previous online NEC meeting on September 16, 2023, it was decided that the conference should take place during the last weekend of November 2023. This decision was influenced by concerns about the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, scheduled for November 11, 2023, and other considerations related to security and logistics.

Unanimous Agreement

The shift in dates was not the only issue discussed and agreed upon during the NEC meeting. The choice of Abuja as the venue for the conference was met with unanimous approval. Specifically, the Maryam Babangida Women Development Centre in Abuja was chosen as the ideal location for this prestigious event.

Furthermore, considering the delay in the conference’s date, the NEC decided to extend the tenure of the current Central Working Committee (CWC) of NAWOJ. This extension is intended to bridge the gap between the original conference date and the rescheduled one. It aligns with Article 13(1) of the NUJ Constitution, ensuring the smooth operation of the Association during this period.

Acknowledgments and Best Wishes

The NEC expressed its gratitude to the 9-Member Credentials Committee for their work in kick-starting the process for the National election of NAWOJ. With these decisions in place, NAWOJ looks forward to successfully hosting the 2023 Triennial National Delegates Conference in Abuja.

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Urges Swift Enforcement of Open Grazing Law

Honorable Jerry Otu,
Representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara
State Constituency

Akwa Ibom State, October 19, 2023 – The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has taken a decisive stand against the rampant destruction of farmlands by herdsmen in the state. During Thursday’s plenary session, Honorable Jerry Otu, representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency, raised concerns about the continuous devastation caused by herdsmen in communities, particularly in Ikot Enwang and its environs.

Expressing his worry, Honorable Otu emphasized the urgent need for the state government to enforce existing laws concerning open grazing. He highlighted the persistent menace posed by herdsmen who unleash their cattle on farmlands, causing significant losses to farmers and disrupting the livelihoods of the people.

Despite efforts to engage in dialogues with the herders and find an amicable solution, the situation has persisted for over two years. Honorable Otu stressed that if not promptly addressed, this issue could not only impact the peace-loving residents of Ikot Enwang but also jeopardize the state’s A.R.I.S.E Agenda, the cornerstone of the present administration.

In response to these concerns, the House called upon the state government, through the Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development, to urgently enforce the open grazing law. Additionally, the House urged the State Commissioner of Police and Commissioner for Internal Security to enhance security measures in and around Ikot Enwang. The establishment of a dedicated Police Post in the area was proposed as a vital step toward ensuring the safety of the affected communities.

Honorable Eric Akpan, representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that more than 31 villages in his constituency had been adversely affected by the activities of herdsmen. He emphasized the critical need for the government to fortify security measures in these vulnerable areas to safeguard farmlands and food security.

Furthermore, Honorable Moses Essien, representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, shared a personal experience of his farmland being destroyed by cattle a few years ago. He emphasized the importance of the executive branch implementing laws enacted by the legislature to maintain law and order.

In closing, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk, Mrs. Nsikakabasi Orok, to communicate the House’s resolution to the Governor through the Ministry of Agriculture for the immediate enforcement of the open grazing law. This collective action by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and prosperity of its people while upholding the rule of law.

In anticipation of the forthcoming Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), a group of dedicated members has unequivocally thrown their support behind the incumbent president, Comrade Ladi Bala. The resounding endorsement was made during a three-day workshop held in the heart of Abuja.

The decision to rally behind Comrade Ladi Bala stems from a collective recognition of her remarkable achievements in steering NAWOJ to greater heights. Her leadership, as affirmed by these members, has ushered in a new era of growth and progress for the Association.

At the heart of Comrade Ladi Bala’s transformative leadership is her unwavering commitment to repositioning NAWOJ. Under her stewardship, NAWOJ has witnessed significant milestones. Notably, the organization, which has thrived for 34 years, now boasts a dedicated office space with staff and offices for all state chapters. This development not only breathes fresh life into NAWOJ but also solidifies its presence.

Additionally, Comrade Ladi Bala’s administration has successfully secured a piece of land and is diligently working towards establishing a permanent and more fitting Secretariat for the Association. This noteworthy progress has afforded NAWOJ, for the very first time, the luxury of operating from an office, with all National officers having their own offices within the Secretariat. It’s an achievement that speaks volumes about the dedication and vision of the current leadership.

Moreover, the narrative of NAWOJ’s status has been revamped. The organization is now fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, cementing its status as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

To set a strategic course for the future, NAWOJ recently wrapped up a comprehensive three-day strategic planning workshop, generously sponsored by ActionAid Nigeria and Global Affairs Canada. The workshop was a vital step in devising a five-year plan encompassing various activities and programs that will further propel NAWOJ towards its goals.

President Comrade Ladi Bala extends her heartfelt appeal to all NAWOJIANS, urging them to offer their unwavering support in order to continue building on the successes achieved thus far. The support she has garnered from the National Consultant of NUJ, Mr. Amos Dunia, exemplifies the widespread belief in her ability to lead the Association towards more commendable accomplishments. Mr. Dunia has pledged his continued support to ensure her second term.

Joining the chorus of support are the Secretary of NAWOJ, Comrade Helen Udofa, and the Treasurer, Mrs. Fatima Abdulrasheed, both seeking reelection. They emphasize the significance of the strides made under Comrade Ladi Bala’s leadership, including the formulation of a gender policy and the establishment of a functional Secretariat. Their shared vision is to propel NAWOJ into the digital age and solidify its position as a dynamic NGO, departing from its traditional professional body status.

In this moment of unity and determination, NAWOJ stands on the precipice of a new era, fortified by the accomplishments of its current leadership and the collective aspirations of its members. With the unwavering support of its dedicated membership, NAWOJ is poised to achieve even greater heights in the years to come.

He recognized the financial complexities involved in organizing such workshops, emphasizing the indispensable nature of the assistance provided. Comrade Helen Udofa, the national secretary, urged association leaders to seize this opportunity to make positive contributions, emphasizing the urgent need for funding to implement crucial projects.

Participants at the workshop expressed overwhelming optimism, believing that the new work plan would bring significant benefits to NAWOJ members, women, children, and the less privileged in the country. This initiative stands as a testament to NAWOJ’s commitment to empowering women journalists and making a positive impact on society.
